Conditions of XII International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz (Senior group) (*.pdf)

1. Competition conditions

The Competition in the Intermediate Group is open to young pianists of all nationalities born between 20 April 1987 and 20 April 2004.

To participate in the Competition, applicants must submit:

  • a filled in application form on the official website of the Competitionwww.horowitzv.org;
  • a high-quality video recording with a program including a virtuoso etude

performed by the applicant (10 to 15 minutes). The video recording must

be uploaded to YouTube (www.youtube.com) and a link to the recording

given in the application form (section «Qualifying Round»).

In addition to filling in the application form, the following documents must be sent

to the e-mail of Competition Administration horowitz@horowitzv.org:

  • a copy of the birth certificate or passport;
  • a copy of the identification code (for citizens of Ukraine);
  • a half-length digital photo (300 dpi), suitable for printing in a booklet and

taken no earlier than one year before submitting the application form;

  • copies of documents confirming previous awards, if any, in music

competitions.

Applicants who are currently students of a Jury member or have a familialrelationship with a Jury member are not allowed to participate in the Competition.

The deadline to submit the application form, documents, and photos to the e-mailof the Competition Administration is 1 February 2020.

Documents and records that arrive incomplete or late will not be considered.

The Qualifying Round - pre-selection on the basis of documents and video

recordings will take place in Kyiv in February 2020.

Having considered the Qualifying Round submissions, the Administration will

determine the participants for the First Round of the Competition and will publish

the list of participants on the website www.horowitzv.org by 25 February 2020.

Invitations to the Competition will be sent to participants by 05 September 2020.

All participants who receive invitations must notify the Competition Administration

of the precise date and time of their arrival by 15 September 2020.

A list of participants who do not appear for the competition without proper notice

about their refusal to participate will be sent to WFIMC and EMCY for distribution

among its members.

Foreign participants are responsible for obtaining their passports and visas.

Applicants may contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine for advice

on these matters.

The participation fee is 100 U.S. dollars or the equivalent sum in the national

currency of Ukraine at the rate of the National Bank of Ukraine, and is to be paid

during registration.

Registration of the participants and drawing of lots will be held on 11 October 2020 from 11.00 AM to 03.00 PM

at the Administration office at the address:

31 L. Tolstogo St., Kyiv, Ukraine.

TIMETABLE OF THE COMPETITION

12 October 2020 - Rehearsal of participants for the First round

13 - 15 October 2020 - First Round

16 -17 October 2020 - Second Round

18 - 20 October 2020 - Third Round

21 October 2020 - Solemn awarding ceremony and the Closing concert of the Competition's

Prizewinners in the Senior Group 

The order in which participants of the Competition perform shall be determined

by drawing of lots and remain unchanged throughout the Competition.

The Competition auditions are open to the general public.

All pieces on the program must be played from memory.

Third Round program will be accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra.

The Prizewinners of the Competition must take part in the Final Concert and accept

the offered concert engagements which are an integral part of the awards.

2. Jury

The Jury of the Competition works according to Jury Regulations. The list of Jury

members will be published on the Competition site no later than 10 January 2020.

Persons who have a familial relationship with any of the participants or are currently

a teacher of any of the participants are not allowed to be Jury members.

The evaluation of the participants' performances at all rounds is conducted by

secret vote.

The Jury has the right to decide on the termination of a performance if it exceeds

the time limit listed in the conditions of the Competition.

The decisions of the Jury at all stages are final, and are not subject to discussion,

revision or appeal.

3. Administration

The Administration does not provide participants with medical insurance.

The Administration of the Competition provides free of charge:

  • accommodation for the participants beginning with the First Round and

continuing while he/she is taking part in the Competition;

  • one rehearsal (10 min.) before the First Round and one rehearsal with

orchestra for the Third Round participants in the concert hall where the

Competition is held.

The Administration owns the exclusive rights to all audio and video recordings

of the Competition performances; they are the property of the International

Charitable Fund of Vladimir Horowitz Competition.

The Administration has the exclusive rights to sign contracts with other parties with

the aim of advertising or selling the above-mentioned materials.

Competitors are not paid any compensation for the competition materials being

used by the Administration.

4. Prizes

The 1st Prize - $10,000 USA, the title of the Prizewinner and the Gold Medal;

The 2nd Prize - $7,500 USA, the title of the Prizewinner and the Silver Medal;

The 3rd Prize - $5,000 USA, the title of the Prizewinner and the Bronze Medal;

The 4th Prize - $2,000 USA, the title of the Prizewinner;

The 5th Prize - $1,500 USA, the title of the Prizewinner;

The 6th Prize - $1,000 USA, the title of the Prizewinner.

The Prizes are awarded according to the Jury's decision.

Depending on participants' achieved results and within limits of established

amount of prizes the Jury has the right:

  • to award not all prizes;
  • to divide awards (except the 1st prize) among the participants.

All prizes are paid in the Ukrainian national currency with income tax withheld in

accordance with the current legislation of Ukraine.

Enterprises, institutions, organizations, public associations, charitable foundations,

as well as individuals may, at their own expense, set additional prizes, special

prizes, and other awards for the Competition participants in agreement with the

organizing committee.

5. Repertoire Requirements

Qualifying Round            

Program of applicant's choice with a required performance of a virtuoso etude.

The performance should last 10 to 15 minutes.

First Round

1. J. S. Bach. One Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier.

2. M. Clementi, J. Hummel, J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, L. Beethoven (participant's

choice).

One complete sonata.

3. F. Chopin, F. Liszt, S. Rachmaninoff, A. Scriabin, C. Debussy, I. Stravinsky,

D. Ligeti (participant's choice).

One virtuoso etude.

4. A piece by a Ukrainian composer.

The performance should last up to 35 minutes.

Second Round

1. A required composition (see Attachment 1, «List of required repertoire for the

Second Round»).

2. One or more piece(s) of choice by composers from the Romantic period to the

present time.

The performance should last up to 45 minutes.

Third Round

Given the peculiarities of the stage work of orchestras in a PANDEMIC, we make changes in the repertoire conditions

of the Third round and we leave for participants the performance of only one declared concerto - of

the «Viennese classics» in complete (see the Attachment № 2 «Works for the Third round») - 6 finalists.  

ATTENTION!

The program submitted in the Application Form cannot be changed after

01 September 2020.

In case of any discrepancy in the interpretation of these Conditions, the

Ukrainian version shall prevail.
